天 (2024)

天 was an exploration inside New Art City, a platform used to create 3D virtual worlds and exhibitions.

It branched off from the SFPC workshop Repatterning & Practice, taught by artists Hiba Ali and Amina Ross, where students showcased final classwork in a collective New Art City “world”. I assembled an axis-like sculpture to encourage the user beneath the world’s surface, following a portal to another “world.” Pictured below is my contribution.

New Art City world 天 was my larger exploration of worldbuilding in 3D space. A far cry from a completed project, it was more of a playful “what if” inside NAC, and a starting point for inquiry. I also considered what traveling the path of a line can imply—perhaps traversing time, across an ocean, to an unreachable diasporic past.

Some visual materials used were provided in the class; some were my own findings, photos, and makings.
